Hitchcock Woods – March 14th, 10:00 AM
Description: Hitchcock Woods superintendent Bennett Tucker will have an update on the “burn program” and how it is helping to restore the old-growth, long-leaf pine forest. We may hear about a long-leaf pine that could qualify as a championship sized tree as well as the on-going effort to relocate the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker to Hitchcock Woods. The hike itself will introduce us to a recently developed trail near the Chalk Cliffs area so you should be prepared to do a bit of up-hill climbing.
Place: We will meet at the Tea Cottage entrance on Dibble Road, across from Rhone Street (1770 Dibble Road). There are good parking spots on the side and off of the road.
Distance: 1.5 miles; about 2 hours
Terrain: Hikes in Hitchcock Woods are sandy underfoot and can be hilly, especially in the area of the Chalk Cliffs.
Bring: Good sneakers or hiking boots, water, snack.
